Person B and I went on a bit of an ultralight shopping spree, here’s what we picked up:
- Gossamer Gear Joshua Tree Mini Lip Balm (4g) replaces my Sun Bum SPF30 Mango (11g)
- Acurite 00316 Digital Window Thermometer (34g). Provides a 24 hour min/max temperature which should help me correlate gear and comfort with overnight conditions (previously I was checking my watch, which I hung from a loop at the top of the tent, whenever I woke up but I don’t feel that that’s representative of actual outside temperatures)
- Gossamer Gear Warm Sak (22g), Person B’s new pot cozy
- Gossamer Gear Long-Handle Bamboo Spoon (12g) replaces my Light My Fire Spork (10g) which I sat on and broke when it slipped under my sleeping pad. It’s longer (more functional) and hopefully will be harder to misplace
- Suunto Clipper Compass (5g). Combined with the thermometer this replaces my ABC watch (67g) for a total savings of 28g
- Gossamer Gear Mini Dropper Bottle Set (3g/bottle without dropper). This replaces a full 30mL bottle of Purell (37g) with a 15g bottle (about 12mL of Purell since it weighs about 1 gram per mL), a more reasonable amount for most trips
- Fuji X-T20 mirrorless APS-C camera (336g). 50% more pixels and sensor area than my previous camera yet 27g lighter. I’ve embraced the used life and got this guy off of KEH Camera
- Fujinon XF 16mm F1.4 R WR (375g), the holy grail of landscape lenses. Not going to pretend it’s light or compact especially compared to my previous lens, but that lens problem is definitely solved
- Four Zpacks Mini-D Carabiners (3g each) for attaching things to… things
- A Zpacks Small Dry Bag (14g) to replace my ancient Osprey 3L dry bag (which Person B secretly covets despite being 12g heavier)
- A refurbished Google Pixel 1 phone (174g with case) off of Amazon, who apparently now does refurbishing (“Amazon Renewed“)
Excluding the camera lens that’s about 140g saved, bringing my base weight to about 12.76 pounds.
Additionally, here are some gear changes:
- Swapping in Panasonic ErgoFit headphones for Mack’s Ear Seals earplugs. It’s a 10g weight hit but in addition to blocking noise the headphones allow me to listen to music or audiobooks, which helps me fall asleep
